What to drink with Spanish ham: a simple tasting to find your pairing

Choosing a drink for Spanish ham is easier once you recognise how that ham tastes on its own. Try one ham through two routes: water as a starting point and a drink you already like. You do not need several bottles or the most expensive leg to learn something useful.

At a glance

Keep the ham constant and change only the drink. Taste one slice alone, then a similar slice with a small sip. Note whether you enjoy it more, equally or less. Water and small portions are enough to start.

Prepare one ham you can try again

Choose one ham, keep its label and serve small portions on clean plates. Follow its storage and serving instructions; do not apply one time out of refrigeration to every pack. Keep plain bread separate and leave the slices undressed. This lets you repeat without changing product, thickness and accompaniment together.

Choose a familiar drink alongside water

Start with still water. To compare, choose one familiar drink, such as a white wine or dry sparkling wine you already enjoy; neither is compulsory. An alcohol-free option works too. WSET’s pairing guide places personal taste in the choice. This exercise does not require a costly new bottle.

Taste twice and write one useful sentence

First, taste a slice and describe texture, salt and how long the flavour lasts in your own words. Sip water and pause. Next, take a similar slice with a sip of your chosen drink. Ask which flavour remains and whether you would repeat the combination. Record ham and drink; a specific sentence is more useful than an unexplained score.

Use what you tasted to plan your purchase

What if everyone disagrees? Keep each person’s preference without naming a winning drink. What if you only want water? Compare two servings of the ham instead. For another session, explore 80 g ham and shoulder packs, choosing ham to keep this exercise consistent, and read the product page. Shop Spanish ham for other formats, without treating a pairing preference as a product category.
