Ham weight and served quantity: why they are different figures

When planning a table you may be counting different things: the weight of a whole ham, the content of packs or slices already on plates. Separating them avoids treating every kilogram as ready to serve. First confirm which presentation the product page describes.

At a glance

A bone-in leg's weight does not directly equal the weight of slices served. With 80 g packs, add net content: two give 160 g and four give 320 g.

What the weight of a whole leg includes

Our whole-ham page states that the piece includes bone and exterior fat. You therefore cannot transfer all its weight into a total of sliced plates. Purchase weight and the weight eventually served describe different stages of preparation.

Check the stated weight and whether the product arrives whole, boneless or prepared another way. If the page does not clarify what is weighed, ask before using the figure to plan a meal.

What you can add up with packs

The example packs state 80 g net content. Multiply the number of packs by 80 to add up this format. Two packs give 160 g; four give 320 g. This sums product content, not packaging.

  • 1 pack of 80 g: 80 g net.
  • 2 packs of 80 g: 160 g net.
  • 4 packs of 80 g: 320 g net.

Why we do not use a universal yield percentage

The anatomy of the piece, its presentation and preparation affect what ends up served in slices. One percentage for every ham would suggest precision we have not verified for that product.

When ordering slicing of a whole leg, ask about the final weight you will receive and which parts are delivered separately. A preparation supplement and a net quantity of packs are different concepts; check both.

Turn the information into a purchase plan

First define the net quantity you want available and how you will serve it. For packs, convert it into whole units; for a leg, confirm presentation and preparation details before estimating plates.

Read whole ham or packs: choosing a format, then explore whole hams and 80 g packs. If comparing cuts too, the ham or shoulder guide keeps that decision separate.
