How to serve sliced ham: arrange an accessible plate in a few steps

A ham plate is easier to enjoy when every slice is easy to pick up. You do not need a tower or an elaborate pattern: choose a proportionate plate, arrange the slices loosely and leave room for serving. This suggestion is for ham you already buy sliced.

At a glance

Keep every slice accessible. Decide the amount first, arrange a low layer and serve bread and other products separately.

1. Decide the amount and choose the plate

Decide how much of your aperitif will be ham before filling the platter. A slightly wider plate allows space between slices; a very small one encourages piling. Several packs can also be divided between small plates around the table.

Do not estimate weight from slice count, as sizes differ. Use the pack's net weight. Our 80 g pack calculator helps when your chosen products have that weight.

2. Read the pack before arranging

Check the product's storage, opening and serving instructions. Prepare a clean plate and handle only the amount you intend to serve. Do not automatically apply another product's instructions.

Our catalogue includes ham and shoulder packs and ham platters. Confirm the format on the product page rather than inferring it only from a serving photograph.

3. Make a low fan or short rows

On a round plate, start near the edge and arrange a low fan with slight overlap. Leave part of each slice free so guests can take it without lifting the entire arrangement. The centre can stay empty; you do not need to cover every centimetre.

On a long platter, use short rows with space between groups. You can keep a slice's natural fold without compressing it. Aim for easy serving rather than perfect uniformity.

4. Keep accompaniments and products separate

Offer bread, picos or regañás in another dish. Guests can choose their combinations and crumbs stay off the ham. Lomo, chorizo and salchichón are also easier to identify on separate dishes.

Label different categories with their product names. For a focused comparison, follow our ham tasting at home. Avoid covering all the slices with sauces before guests can taste them plain.

5. Match the format to your serving plan

The commercial phrase «efecto cuchillo» does not by itself mean hand slicing. If the method matters, check the description and our machine or hand slicing guide.
