Spanish ham nutrition labels: from 100 g to your plate

A nutrition table is more useful when you know the quantity it describes. Before comparing two hams, locate the 100 g column and keep that separate from pack weight. You can then calculate for the amount actually served.

At a glance

Compare like with like: 100 g against 100 g. For another amount, multiply the declared value by the grams served and divide by 100. Pack contents are not a recommended serving.

Start with the column and units

The European Commission explains that nutrition declarations on most prepacked foods include energy, fat, saturates, carbohydrate, sugars, protein and salt, per 100 g or 100 ml. A per-portion column may also appear. For ham, find 100 g and distinguish kJ and kcal from nutrient grams: different units cannot be added together.

Calculate for the amount served

Formula: value per 100 g × grams served ÷ 100. Invented example, unrelated to products on this page: a label declaring 4 g salt per 100 g would give 1.2 g salt for 30 g. At 200 kcal per 100 g, those 30 g would give 60 kcal. The 30 g is solely an arithmetic example, not a consumption recommendation.

Compare equivalent figures without jumping to conclusions

If one page gives values per 100 g and another per 25 g, convert to the same basis first. Do not fill a specific ham’s table using generic internet figures. A single number neither determines your diet nor guarantees flavour. For personal dietary guidance, consult a qualified professional familiar with your circumstances.

Check ingredients, allergens, net weight, storage and designation separately. The nutrition table does not replace them. Request any essential information you cannot read before buying. Browse Spanish ham formats or check your chosen ham and shoulder packs. Current prices appear below; nutrition calculations require that product’s own label.
