Fresh figs with jamón: a two-ingredient starter

A fig needs no elaborate filling to accompany jamón. This version cuts the fruit into quarters and serves the ham in loose folds, so everyone can take a little of each without dismantling a stuffed fig.

At a glance

4 starters · about 15 minutes · 4 fresh figs and 80 g jamón. No oven, cheese or sauce.

Ingredients and timing for 4 starters

Preparation and assembly: about 15 minutes, with no cooking. Makes four starters.

  • 4 ripe fresh figs, firm enough to cut
  • 80 g sliced cured ham

Step-by-step method

  1. Wash your hands and use a clean board, knife and serving dish. Gently rinse the figs under running water, without soap, and dry carefully.
  2. Trim the stalk end. Cut each fig into quarters; leave the skin if you like it and it is in good condition. If the fruit collapses when cut, use halves and serve with a fork.
  3. Separate the ham into manageable pieces. Divide the figs between four small plates and share the 80 g ham among them.
  4. Arrange the ham in loose folds beside the fruit. Serve just assembled; there is no need to wrap each quarter or secure it with a cocktail stick.

Adapt the recipe to your kitchen

Fresh or dried figs? This recipe uses fresh fruit. Dried figs have a different texture and are not a direct swap for this presentation. Choose fruit that holds its shape; discard rotten fruit.

If preparing ahead, keep the ingredients separate and follow the ham's storage instructions. Cut and assemble close to serving so the juice does not soak the slices. We add no honey: taste the two ingredients together first.
