The order matters in a simple salad: dry the leaves, dress the vegetables, then finish with jamón. There is no need to stir the slices through the liquid at the bottom.
4 starters · about 15 minutes · lettuce, tomato, cucumber, 80 g jamón and olive oil–lemon dressing.
Ingredients and timing for 4 starters
Preparation and assembly: about 15 minutes, no cooking. Quantities for four starters, not four main courses.

- 150 g lettuce leaves ready to use
- 250 g cherry tomatoes
- 200 g cucumber
- 80 g sliced cured ham
- 20 ml olive oil
- 10 ml lemon juice
Step-by-step method
- Wash your hands and use clean utensils. Rinse tomatoes, cucumber and lettuce under running water without soap; if packaged leaves are labelled ready to eat, follow that instruction. Dry the leaves well.
- Halve the tomatoes and cut the cucumber into half moons. Drain visible liquid. Tear large leaves into pieces easy to eat with a fork.
- Mix the oil and lemon in a cup. Put the vegetables on a dry platter, add the dressing and toss gently. Taste before deciding whether to add salt.
- Arrange manageable pieces of ham in loose folds on the salad. Serve just assembled, without continuing to mix the ham into the dressing.

If water pools at the bottom, check that leaves were dried and tomatoes drained before increasing the dressing. A wide platter lets you spread the ingredients without compressing them.
To prepare ahead, refrigerate cut vegetables separately from the dressing and ham; store the ham according to its packaging. Mix and add the slices at serving time. Cheese or nuts are not needed for this recipe; additions change both the shopping list and allergens.
